Some will be more familiar than other, but all provide fans with the exhilaration of horse racing each and every year. Churchill Downs- Officially opened in 1875 when the first Kentucky Derby was held, this historic landmark located in Central Avenue south Louisville, Kentucky is the most famous site stateside. Named for John and Henry Churchill the grounds has seen more action than any other with the Kentucky Derby Museum located on site, any avid equestrian enthusiast will be in heaven. The Kentucky Derby which is held for two weeks in April and May of each year is the states’ largest single annual event. Belmont Park- Made famous as the home of the Belmont Stakes, the third leg of the Triple Crown, Belmont Park was first opened May 4, 1905 in the hamlet of Elmont, New York in Nassau County, Long Island. Known as The Championship Track, it’s history rich since the early 20th century with every major champion including each of the 11 Triple Crown Winners having competed there. Named for financier and sportsman August Belmont, Sr. the Belmont Stakes race has been run since 1905. Santa Anita Park- Considered the best wintertime horse racing park in not just the United States but across the world. Santa Anita Park was opened on December 25, 1934 and it was a very Merry Christmas indeed to race fans. The park is home to numerous prestigious races two include the Santa Anita Derby and Santa Anita Handicap. The Thoroughbred racetrack is located in Arcadia, California and offers racing events through autumn and winter. Saratoga Race Course- Opened on August 3, 1863 the Saratoga Race Course is the oldest organized sporting venue in the United States. Located in Saratoga Springs, New York the course is home to the Graded stakes races such as the Alabama Stakes, Travers Stakes, and Whitney Handicap to name a few. The history of this great race course also includes the burial in the infield of champion filly Go for Wand, who sadly suffered during the stretch run of the 1990 Breeders Cup Distaff a fatal injury. Hollywood Park- Opened in 1938 by the Hollywood Turf Club in Inglewood, California it is truly Hollywood with its chairman none other than Jack Warner of Warner Brothers and 600 various Hollywood luminaries as shareholders. The park is home to such races as Shoemaker Breeders’ Cup Mile Stakes, Hollywood Derby, and Citation Handicap. Historic events include hosting the inaugural Breeders’ Cup in 1984, 1987, and 1997, the first million dollar winning horse Citation in 1951 and last but not least the surpassing of Bill Shoemaker’s all time record for race wins by jockey Laffit Pincay Jr. on December 10, 1999. No matter if you are visiting the above five tracks or any other track in the United States you are sure to find the same historic excitement that has been enthralling crowds for hundreds of years. Horse racing is a classic and iconic sport, its history filled with joy and sadness, there is no more exciting an event than a Day at the Races.
