What Is Qi Gong And Why Is It Good for You?

By: Roberto Garabell

For centuries, eastern medical philosophy has held the belief that an invisible energy flows through the universe. This energy is the spark and sustenance of life, driving the movement of all living things. Qi Gong is a method of balancing and building that energy within you.

Qi Gong (sometimes spelled Qigong or Chi Gong) and the "Qi" refers to this energy, or vital life force. The "Gong" is the work or exercise we must learn and practice in order to harness and build that energy. Though it's difficult to put a literal translation on Qi Gong, it essentially means "energy work" or "energy exercise," and most of these exercises focus on the role of correct breathing, movement and concentration.

Qi Gong is practiced either as an active form seen as yang dominant, or a passive form seen as yin dominant. While active Qi Gong is ever-changing and assertive, passive Qi Gong tends to be more tranquil and still, involving almost no movement.

Qi Gong, in all its forms, is designed to promote longevity and health, but also build and calm the mind, with a focus on spiritual enlightenment.

Active Qi Gong, like Pal Dan Gum (a form of Qi Gong) is often seen as a form of meditation-in-motion, developed specifically to get the Qi flowing through the body. By using movement and breathing, active Qi Gong both builds and balances the Qi, or energy, that connects the spirit, body and mind. However, it is also used to promote health and provide a low-impact form of exercise.

Think of active Qi Gong as a set of exercises. You are exerting yourself and therefore reaping the health benefits of physical exercise, but you're also working on calming your mind and spirit - a crucial element of overall health.
